At one point Gohan was originally supposed to have been the strongest character in Dragon Ball Z. Not to mention he was the one who was able to defeat Cell. Gohan was also ment to have actually defeated Majin Buu when he arrived to face him in his Mystic form. (Watch this clip)
A few fans say that Gohan was really the main character at one point.
It was really upsetting having to watch Gohan grow soft after the Majin Buu saga. Especially in GT but thankfully that wasn't Akira Toriyama's creation.
